What we believe
Accelerated technological change has always been an accepted and expected phenomenon within engineering and scientific environments. However, in the intensely competitive industrial arena that all firms now face, the penalties for technological obsolescence are increasingly severe. Firms that fall behind find their economic viability quickly and dramatically curtailed.
For this reason, the need for the technical specialist to be able to
manage both the economic opportunities and consequences associated with
changing technology has grown in importance. Indeed, the availability of
the Internet and World-Wide Web have impacted the technology of
management itself. As a consequence, neither the technical specialist
who lacks a broad understanding of business nor the manager who lacks a
technical frame of reference can contribute effectively to an
organization's success.
Purdue University's College of Engineering and Krannert School of Management are nationally and globally recognized leaders in providing graduate education programs that address the growing interdependence of technology and managerial decision making. This tradition is carried on in the Engineering Management program. It offers high-quality instruction in a non-degree format to individuals seeking professional management education to complement their engineering or scientific education and experience.
What the program provides
The objectives of the program are twofold. The first is to update participants' knowledge of important developments in selected technical areas within engineering. Special attention is paid to new applications of tools, technology, and processes in manufacturing and operational management.
The second objective is to provide management courses in areas particularly relevant to the technical professional-turned-manager. These areas include the traditional functions within management: Managerial accounting and financial analysis, human resource management (especially negotiation, teamwork, and leadership skills), strategic marketing management, and program/project management.
