Hear what they are saying about AMP!
Now in its eleventh year, the AMP program has exceeded the expectations of its designers and its participants alike. AMP has been successful as an innovative program that provides pragmatic business education to young scientists and engineers, allowing them to expand their career horizons and options. This success shows through in the reactions and results provided by past participants.
Here are a few of the reactions of our participants:
"Interviewers have been unanimously impressed by the fact that I have some formal business training, noting that a substantial part of the job being offered would involve budgeting, marketing of research ideas, and HR management."
"You learn an invaluable language that is useful when interviewing, taking plant trips, meeting managers, etc. You learn enough to understand 'management speak...' "
"My employer thought very highly of the program during the interview process."
"My student learned a lot about business enterprise, and he uses many aspects in his technical management of laboratory personnel."
"Participating in this program made me realize the importance of viewing the firm as a whole, of learning the basics of financial language and understanding how to read financial reports, and most of all, the need for strategic thinking at all levels of the firm."
"I feel that the format and scope of the AMP program covered the basics of what any employee in a private workplace should know about 'nuts and bolts.' Often, scientists are placed in positions related so intensively to research and/or development that they do not appreciate that the goal of a company is foremost to survive. (AMP) made me appreciate more fully the importance of management and finance personnel."
"My engineering designs at work are much more focused towards the overall business picture."
"I am better able to present engineering work to management in light of management's concerns."
"My improved sense of business-related skills helped me to obtain a tenure-track teaching position at another Big Ten School of Business."
"I am able to participate in and contribute to the business aspects of product development."
"After AMP, my student started a consulting company and organized all the business aspects."
"One of the factors in the success of our start-up firm was our attendance in the AMP program. It gave us an appreciation for the traditional areas of a business and a foundation in best business practices."
